Bronchoscopy

A bronchoscopy may be used to diagnose conditions such as lung cancer.

Bronchoscopy is a medical procedure performed by our specialists to assist in the diagnosis of conditions affecting the respiratory system. Unlike an X-Ray, which take photographs of the lung, bronchoscopy lets the doctor see the inside of a patient’s windpipe and air passages using a fibre-optic instrument called a bronchoscope.

Bronchoscopies are performed at Darwin Day Surgery

This technique is used to evaluate lung symptoms such as a chronic cough, hemoptysis (coughing up blood), or when a lung disease or lung cancer is suspected. Bronchoscopy may also be used for treatment including:

  • Treating bleeding inside the airways
  • Placing a stent to open constricted airways
  • Deliver radiation therapy directly to lung cancer
